Estonia was first mentioned in the 1st century AD by the Roman historian Tacitus. He referred to the Aestii people. Estonia was conquered by the German Order of Knights in 1202 and Christianized by the orders of the pope who wanted to crusade against the Pagan’s around the Baltic Sea. Tartu was the last stronghold in Estonia to fall in 1224. Occupied in June 1940 by Soviet forces in conjunction with the Germans, they set up a puppet parliament that elected to join the USSR. This was reversed in 1991 after a failed Soviet coup. Since then, Estonia has emerged as its own and Tartu is the known as the intellectual of the nation.
Living in Tartu is like living in any western European city but with half the price tag. Famously known as a student’s city it is the largest city in Estonia. Those willing to indulge in recreational activities are sure to find something suitable. Real estate bargains can still be found, albeit the gold rush being over. If we compare the cost of living to a large city such as London, then living in Tartu is very cheap indeed.
